Maple Sugar Time

A poem by Rachel, age 10.

The hard work of sugaring starts in early spring;
when the snow may be heavy or light and the birds start to sing. When we go out to gather sap I hear a noise tap...tap...tap...
My uncle goes up the hill with the tractor,
and everyone else comes running after.
Up the hill in the old sugaring shack,
there hangs our jackets on the wooden rack.
We all pitch in to fill the arch with wood;
then carefully filter the sap the way we know we should.
We have the sap ready to boil,
now we are ready for a long day of toil.
As the boiling sap turns to beautiful gold;
the result of our work begins to unfold.
Sugaring is here for one special reason,
It's because it is the right time of season.
